Installing New Brick Pavers Walkways

If you want to make a sidewalk, you could just lay some concrete; however, if you want your sidewalk to be a work of art, you should consider installing new brick pavers walkways instead. The first thing you should do when thinking about installing a walkway is layout the path. You can use a garden hose as a guide. Just lay it out in the shape and path that you want. Mark the path with lawn lime by filing a paper cup with a hole punched in the bottom and shaking it out along the path of the hose. Once you have your path marked, you will want to strip the intended area of grass, gravel and soil to create a clean surface for installing your new brick pavers.

Line the bottom of your excavation with a couple of inches of concrete sand or stone dust to create a smooth, receptive surface. Level the surface using a carpenter's level and a screed board. The sand or stone dust should be a couple  of inches higher than the intended level of your finished walkway. Don't worry that it is too high. It will settle with time and use.

Keep the sides of your walkway marked with string so that it will be perfectly straight. Begin laying out your new paver stones in the pattern you have determined. Don't work lengthwise. Instead, work across the width of your new walkway laying a section at a time until you have worked your way from one end to the other. It is helpful to have an assistant work along with you cutting smaller pieces of paving stone with a wet saw to fill in any odd spaces. You should also install a retainer strip along the sides of the path as you work.

Once you are finished installing new brick pavers to form a walkway, you should cast some concrete sand or stone dust across the top of the entire surface. Cast it generously and then sweep away the excess with a stiff broom. Use a back and forth motion that forces the material in between the pavers. This will help hold them in place.

Next you should use a comparator to settle your sand or dust, push the pavers into your sub-base and lock them in place.

When you have finished installing new brick pavers as a walkway, you will want to refurbish the area surrounding the walk by replanting grass or other plantings that may have been disrupted by the process.
