Having a business doing asphalt paving is an excellent choice for a business that will pay well and be around for a long time. If you decide to do this you should also become a member of the NAPA. When you join the NAPA it will be advantageous for your business and it will help your company become more viable and profitable in the long term. You will also be kept up to date with the most modern asphalt technologies when you subscribe to the asphalt pavement magazine.
In addition, the NAPA can help you because of the release of two new books. These two new books cover a variety of important asphalt topics that will help engineering consultants, asphalt pavement mix producers, and road owners. The books are important to understand how to effectively utilize reclaimed asphalt pavement. These two books are a necessity for anyone who is in the asphalt paving business.
The first book called “Best Practices for RAS Management and RAP” was written by Randy C. West, PhD, P.E. This book covers inventory management, pavement milling, sampling, processing, and various testing of RAP methods and recycled asphalt shingles. There is also a detailed discussion of many production concerns. The other book entitled “High RAP Asphalt Pavements” is also by the same author along with a co-author Audrey Copeland PhD, P.E. and it provides information about the lessons learned from the Japan practice. This book details the many reports from the 2014 findings of the Japanese methods and innovations for asphalt pavements that are porous.
Both of these publications have been produced under a cooperative agreement with the NAPA and the Federal Highway Administration. They are available for free by going to the NAPA online store. Both publications use a high quality PDF electronic document format. Almost 1/3 of all asphalt produced during the year of 2014 was produced using recycled materials. This recycling was produced by using a warm mix asphalt technological process.
A recent survey conducted by the NAPA discovered that 114,000,000 tons of warm mix asphalt was produced in 2014. This figure was a 7% increase from the year 2013. What is really astounding is that there was a 577% increase from when the survey was first introduced in 2009. This survey helps to verify that using recycled materials is not only preferable and profitable but it is environmentally friendly.
