Choosing Between Hardwood Or Carpet Flooring

One of the biggest, most important interior design choices you can make is choosing between hardwood flooring or carpeting. Fights in marriages break out over this. Friendships are ruined. Prospective buyers won't look at your house again because you chose the wrong type of flooring. So how do you make the best choice for you?

How Do You Clean?

Hardwood floors and carpets are both cleaned very differently. Most people assume that carpets are harder to keep clean because they retain stains and smells. However, they are relatively easy to maintain since you only need to vacuum them about once a week.
Hardwoods, on the other hand, can be easily swept up, but if you want to do a deeper clean you have to get out the mop and bucket. Also, depending on the type of wood and finish, it may get even more expensive.

Do You Have Pets And Kids?

Carpets are considered better for people with pets, especially dogs. This is because the claws on an animal can scuff up hardwoods irreparably. If you're someone who has a lot of big dogs and care a lot about the appearance of your flooring, then you may want to go with carpet.

Kids bring in their own problems. One-on-one and carpets are great for cushioning kids and making your home cozier, hardwoods are easier to mop up, especially if Junior has been playing outside in the mud. We've all seen that horrible incident of a young child who spilled juice all over the carpet. If your child is relatively clean, than carpet may be for him - or at least in his room.

What's Your Budget?

Usually, carpet flooring are cheaper. They come in many different styles and colors to match your overall look. So do hardwoods, but they get more expensive depending on the type of wood you want.
Sometimes it's all about budget and balance. Some couples will compromise by having hardwoods in the hallways and kitchen while having carpeting everywhere else, particularly the living areas. Just remember, that regardless of which one you choose, you will have to maintain them. Wood flooring needs to be cleaned regularly, and cheap carpets tend to wear down quickly. Whichever way you choose to go, be sure to get a good quality that will last you for years.

Good luck in choosing the right flooring for your home. Come rain or shine, your home should be cozy enough for you.
