How Does Windshield Repair Work?

The type of glass that is used for ordinary window glass in our houses is tempered glass and is very strong and clear, but if it breaks, it shatters into many very sharp pieces, and it would not work very well for windshield glass in our cars. It would be extremely dangerous, as it would break at the slightest rock or pebble hitting it.

Plastic is very safe, as it doesn't shatter, but it scratches so easily, it would not be long until we would not be able to see anything out of the windshield at all.

This is why the auto and glass industries came up with laminated glass, or simply two pieces of tempered glass that are fused together to a rubber inner layer. The two glass layers are independent of each other and the rubber serves the purpose of acting like a sponge, which absorbs the shock are lessens chances of breaking the glass from little pebbles and road debris.

When a rock hits the windshield, it usually only breaks the outer glass layer, and if a huge layer hits the windshield and really hits with a force, the entire windshield won't tumble into your lap because it will be held together by the rubber layer.

The typical windshield repair that we see advertised is for the rock chip that cause damage to the outer layer of glass.
When you have a glass company fix your windshield they will inject a polymer resin into the chip and it will smooth down under pressure and fuse with the outer layer of glass, and you won't be able to see that the glass was even marred.

Most people simply use their car insurance to pay for the job, as there is usually no deductible and to the insured person who has the chip in the window it is like getting it done for free. The window company shows up at the person's residence, takes about 20 minutes prepping the window, and uses his special equipment to inject the resin, and viola - the window is fixed.

The window repair bills the insurance company for the job and everybody is happy. Actually, if you are ambitious, you could buy a repair kit at a local hardware store, a Walmart,or an AutoZone store and fix the windshield yourself, but obviously if you have never done that before, it is easier to call the windows installation company.
