Advantages Of Owning A Boat Dock

Although it can be argued that prior to owning a dock one should probably own a boat, that is not necessarily so. A boat dock can be used to have swimming parties, barbecues, fishing excursions, and late night beer fests with all of your buddies. It could even be  said that a dock is more useful, for more different activities than a boat could ever think of being, plus it uses no fuel. Let's take a look at some of the pros and cons of building a dock, and some other considerations involved.
How strong your dock is, and how nice it looks, are probably two of the most important considerations when you start planning to build your dock. Remember, when you're near water you will eventually get some inclement weather, storms, floods, or even snow and ice, so all of these different weather hazards need to be considered in your construction plans. By taking the extra time and planning in construction, then spending extra money for quality lumber and fasteners, you can relieve yourself of the worry that your dock will sink or be destroyed in any upcoming storms. You should definitely invest in the highest quality treated lumber available in your area that is approved for docks. Plus, all your fasteners should be screws or bolts of the highest quality you can purchase, most likely hot dipped zinc, adequate for installation near water.
When determining the size of your dock it's important to take into consideration the depth of the water near  the shore where you are going to construct it. You will want to make sure that you have adequate depth alongside the dock for all of the activities that you want to pursue from the dock such as fishing, swimming, and even docking a boat.
Remember as well, that many bodies of water have seasonal differences in volume and levels and your dock should take that into consideration by being either extra long or being able to float farther out into the body of water when needed. Also remember that if you're going to use your dock primarily for entertaining, similar to a large floating deck, you will want to make sure it's extra wide to accommodate plenty of chairs and picnic tables.  Plus, you'll want to include a railing in order to keep your partying friends from falling overboard.
As you can see, building a boat dock in your backyard doesn't necessarily have to involve a boat. A good quality boat dock made for entertaining guests, swimming and fishing can be all you need to enjoy living near the water. And by making sure that you have used quality materials and solid planning you'll be able to enjoy your dock many years to come.
